Create your first survey
This walks through a complete survey, start to finish. Each step links to the article that goes deeper.
Before you start
You need a researcher profile. If you haven’t set one up, the app will point you at it the first time you try to create something — it takes a minute and it’s free.
1. Create the survey
From Surveys, choose to create a new survey and give it a name. You now have an empty survey with one page.
2. Add your questions
The Build tab is the editor. A survey is made of pages, pages hold blocks, and blocks hold questions. Add a question, pick its type, and the editor drawer opens on the right with everything that question supports — its text, description, settings, choices and rules.
Start simple: a couple of questions on one page. See Anatomy of a survey and Question types.
3. Make answers behave
Two optional passes, both worth knowing about early:
- Validation marks a question required, caps a text length, or forces a format such as an email address. See Validation rules.
- Logic shows and hides questions, skips ahead, scores answers or pipes an earlier answer into a later question. See Logic rules.
4. Preview it
The Preview tab walks the real survey as a respondent sees it. Preview responses are marked as previews and kept out of your results, so test as much as you like. See Previewing and testing.
5. Send it out
There is no separate publish button. A survey goes live the moment you create a distribution on the Distribute tab — a shareable link, an email invite, or a send to members or records of a study.
Creating a distribution pins it to the survey exactly as it stands, so later edits never disturb people already answering. See Distributing your survey.
6. Watch the answers arrive
Responses lists everything collected, complete or part-finished, and lets you open any single response or export the lot. Analysis summarises the answers question by question. See Responses and results.
