Roles and permissions

Every study, organisation and survey has its own members, and each member has one role there. A role only applies where it was given. Being an organisation admin does not give you a role on the organisation’s studies or surveys.

  • Owner has full control. A study has exactly one owner.
  • Admin runs the study day to day, including its participant data. Admins manage data entry and billing members. Only the owner can change or remove an admin.
  • Data entry works with records and responses. They cannot change how the study is set up or export data.
  • Billing pays for the study. They cannot see any participant data.

Some older studies also have Curator members. Curators can view and edit records, export records, manage consent, participants and surveys. The role is no longer offered to new members.

Seeing a study or survey listed is not the same as opening it. Opening one needs a role on that study or survey, or a share. Organisation roles never give access to study data.

On a study’s surveys, the study role counts as well. Study owners and admins can edit and delete them whatever their survey role.

Team roles

Teams group members inside an organisation. A team’s owner and admins can edit the team and manage who is in it. Admins can add and remove members and promote them to admin. Members belong to the team and can request new studies. Team roles add nothing to a member’s organisation role.

Ownership

Every study, organisation and survey has exactly one owner. Ownership moves only by a transfer, which makes the old owner an admin (a collaborator on a survey). An owner cannot leave or be removed until they have transferred ownership.
